Tri-county Literacy Council is a non-profit, all-volunteer community of literacy education professionals in western-central New Jersey. Our council is made up of teachers (both active and retired), librarians, and administrators who are interested in literacy education.  Members work in public and private schools, primarily in Hunterdon and Warren counties, but we also have members from Somerset and Morris counties. We welcome all educational professionals without restriction to residence or location of employment.

Our Mission

Tri-county Literacy Council NJ strives to promote literacy by providing professional development opportunities, such as lectures and workshops, for educators to improve their capabilities as teachers of literacy. We know that effective teaching requires a commitment to life-long learning, and our goal is to build a supportive community in which our members can continue to develop their craft as teachers of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Our Work
There are 3 key components to our work as a council:
Professional development opportunities for K-12 educators in all areas related to literacy.
We sponsor three annual professional development events:
  • Our Teacher-to-Teacher conference where members volunteer to present workshops in which they share expertise and best practices from their own classrooms with their colleagues.
  • The Mid-Winter Conference, where an outside speaker will present on a relevant and timely topic related to literacy instruction, featuring strategies for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and/or technology.
  • Our Spring Fling Conference where an author of a professional, children’s, or young adult book will address our community over dinner. These speakers motivate us in our work with the children we teach by engaging us in conversation and activities focused on inspiring our students to become better readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers.
Young Authors Writing Competition  One of our central goals as a council is to foster good writing among our students.  Teachers belonging to Tri-county Literacy Council may submit excellent student writing in the categories of poetry, short story, personal narrative, and essay.
Each year, 40 to 50 winning students are honored at our Young Authors Awards Ceremony in May.

Service to the community  Our Gail Coe Habitat for Humanity Literacy Project  is named after a beloved colleague who passed away several years ago. Passionate about reading, Gail was also instrumental in connecting our council with the Habitat for Humanity organization.  This project provides home libraries and gift cards to bookstores for new Habitat families in our area. At our conferences and events, we accept money donations to our Habitat for Humanity project fund, and from time to time, as needed, we run book drives to collect new or gently used books.

Our History We started as the Tri-county Reading Association in 1963; as a result of our affiliation with the International Reading Association and the New Jersey Reading Association, we became the Tri-county Reading Association.

In July 2016, the Executive Board voted to become an independent non-profit and we incorporated under the name Tri-county Literacy Council. We’ve been doing the same work since 1963:  providing educators with opportunities for professional development in the area of literacy instruction.
